Demographic trends in Slovakia
The dynamic ageing of the population is being gradually reflected in the labour market where the workforce will be smaller and older. At the same time fewer numbers of young people are entering the labour market. Strong population cohorts of “Husák’s children” (the specific generation of children born in the former Czechoslovakia during the 1970s, nicknamed after the communistic ruler of the time) are reaching older age levels. Increasing retirement age keeps more older people in the labour market. As the result, the ageing population must adjust its priorities and define new needs. One of the essential measures is to adjust the performance of work and the working environment to the ageing workforce.
Another phenomenon associated with ageing of the population will also have an impact on the amount of available workforce, namely the lack of infrastructure to meet the needs for the care of the elderly persons. We are already finding that a portion of potential workers are less active in the labour market due to caregiving responsibilities towards their children, parents and/or, in the case of the sandwich generation, combination of assisting their children and caring for their parents.
Adapting work performance and the working environment to the changing structure of the labour force at all life stages will therefore be crucial.

Adapting to an ageing labour market needs must be a complex process that will span several areas. It will be necessary to implement measures aimed not only at older workers, but also at other age groups. The smaller size of the available workforce will require the participation of all age groups of workers to the maximum extent possible.
The optimal tool that should (if properly applied) create appropriate preconditions for the different age groups of workers is age management. The need to implement the principles of age management in practice is also referred to in the National Programme on Active Ageing for 2021-2030 adopted by the Government of the Slovak Republic, based on which the objectives of this project are defined.
The national project Age Management: Work adapted to age stages, implemented by the Alliance of Sector Councils, focuses on the creation of sectoral models for the implementation of age management principles. These models will be available to all employers and will provide principles for the successful implementation of age management into the company culture, a stable advisory database and other tools to manage this issue.
The outputs of the project will be supported by research on the work ability of employees, self-employed people and people who want to work, but their life circumstances do not allow them to do so (barriers to their active working life will be examined). Research will be carried out in all sectors of the economy. With a total of 15,600 respondents, it is the largest research on work ability in Europe. In addition, the project aims to submit proposals for necessary legislative changes.
