The dynamic ageing of the population is being gradually reflected in the labour market where the workforce will be smaller and older. At the same time fewer numbers of young people are entering the labour market. Strong population cohorts of “Husák’s children” (the specific generation of children born in the former Czechoslovakia during the 1970s, nicknamed after the communistic ruler of the time) are reaching older age levels. Increasing retirement age keeps more older people in the labour market. As the result, the ageing population must adjust its priorities and define new needs. One of the essential measures is to adjust the performance of work and the working environment to the ageing workforce.
Another phenomenon associated with ageing of the population will also have an impact on the amount of available workforce, namely the lack of infrastructure to meet the needs for the care of the elderly persons. We are already finding that a portion of potential workers are less active in the labour market due to caregiving responsibilities towards their children, parents and/or, in the case of the sandwich generation, combination of assisting their children and caring for their parents.
